Annie
walked into Polly the Pedestrian’s office. Polly smiled as Annie sat down,
“Hello Annie! How are you feeling today?”
“Not very well,” Annie replied
grumpily, “I am tired a lot. It is like I don’t have any energy! I can’t keep
up with the kids on the playground. They are also a lot bigger than I am! My
parents are both so tall and yet I am short! Also my stomach has been hurting.”
Polly considered this and said, “It
may be a problem with your diet. Tell me do you eat lots of milk and cheese?
How about meat? Or things with oil in it?”
Annie shook her head in reply. Now
knowing what was wrong Polly wrote down some notes on her clipboard then
announced, “You should be fine dear! You just need to eat more lipids!”
Annie
took the sheet and read it with her eyebrows furrowed in intense concentration.
Then she set it down and looked up at Polly, “I think I got it now!”
“You do? That is wonderful! Can you
tell me what you learned without looking at the paper,” Polly asked.
Annie nodded enthusiastically, “I’m
really really smart!” She straightened and began to recite what she had
learned, “A lipid is a real word. It is a type of nutrient and a nutrient
something in food you need. So that means lipids are in food and we need
lipids. Also these things called carbohydrate and proteins. Just because we
need these things and they are in food doesn’t mean we can stuff ourselves
silly sadly. We have to be careful and eat just the right amount. It is like
story of Goldilocks! We only need 30% of fats that are lipids. We need to make
sure they are the good lipids, not the bad ones. There are triglycerides, fats,
cholesterol, hormones, bile salts, wax, and vitamins A, D, E, and K. Lipids
give us energy and they store our energy. They are important for the cell
membrane, hormones, and bile acids. They are components of the nervous system.
Lipids look like a chain in something called a molecular structure. They have
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. I need to have more lipids so I need to eat more
milk, meat, and cheese!”
